Chapter 23

Guyad Checks In

Guyad

Guyad shook his head and cursed. If he got in trouble because his girlfriend had a “feeling” about the queen's well-being, Guyad was going to have some strong words. Regardless, he ran up the four flights of stairs and up the tower to the royal suite. The guard on duty stepped to the side and greeted Guyad with a nod. Guyad knocked hard on the door.

“I must come in and check on Queen Ellandra.” His heart pounded violently; he would never do something so unprofessional on his own. He winced at the thought of how strange and inconvenient this would be for the king and queen.

The king opened the door, wearing a pair of satin boxers.

“What's the meaning of this, Major Lurca?” demanded King Tarrington.

“Your Majesty, I know it's late, but I need to check on the queen.” He came in and saw Queen Ellandra on the bed, fast asleep. He placed his hand on her forehead and then crouched down beside her, “Are you feeling well? Captain Jur thinks something may be wrong.” Guyad then looked at the king. “She feels really hot. Captain Jur wants to check her. I don't know; she must have some medical surveillance on the queen.”

The king nodded, so Guyad removed her covers and cursed loudly. The queen was lying in a puddle of blood. “We need to move her now! I don't have time to wait for a stretcher.” Guyad put his muscular arms underneath the queen and lifted her out of bed in one smooth movement.

“Make way!” he yelled as he jogged with the queen in his arms.

He tried not to show it, but he was absolutely terrified. What if something terrible happened to the queen or the royal babies? He couldn't let that happen. Her blood covered his arms and torso, but he didn't care; the only important thing right now was for her to be examined immediately. Hopefully, with a miracle, they would survive whatever was happening. The king followed closely behind, praying out loud.

Finally, they reached the medical ward's automatic double doors and saw that Dr. Kortez himself was just arriving.

“Your Majesty!” the doctor exclaimed in alarm. “Lurca, lay her on that bed! Zendo,” he called out to the nurse who was on duty, “get out the sonogram!”

Guyad gently lay her on the bed and stepped away, feeling terribly hopeless and helpless. His usual rough exterior was stripped away momentarily as he slumped into a chair in the hallway and began to chastise himself for challenging Rayah’s urgent request earlier.

A moment later, the king joined him, pacing the hallway. A few minutes later, Rayah came bursting into the hall from a far staircase, followed by Kaled and Ondraus, who were holding Evia and Ensin in their arms.

“Major Lurca!” exclaimed Rayah upon seeing the blood all over his uniform.

“The queen,” he stammered, “something's wrong with her babies. I...I carried her over here.”

Her gaze fell upon the mayhem over his shoulder. The look of concern creased the lines on her forehead.
